Everything you need to know about Aloe Vera

You may have seen aloe vera before. You've probably seen it in your hand lotion. You've probably also seen it in sunburn cream, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, heartburn treatments, hand soap, shampoo, facial tissues, and even on the tip of your razor.

The aloe plant seems to be a natural miracle for medicine. Aloe barbadensis has been found to contain all kinds of helpful substances for the human body. Its juice contains 6 chemical agents that are known to destroy disease-causing microorganisms: lupeol, salicylic acid, urea nitrogen, cinnamic acid, phenol, and sulfur.  This means that by consuming aloe or putting it on a wound, you are decreasing the chance for infection. Aloe vera also boasts 3 anti-inflammatory fatty acids: cholesterol, campesterol, and B-sitosterol. It has been used to help with treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, ulcers, and inflammatory conditions of internal organs and systems.

In addition to the antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, the aloe plant has been used for thousands of years as a healing herb for everything from burns to constipation. It is welItl known for its ability to soothe sunburns and treat minor cuts. Some research also suggests that aloe vera has positive effects in diabetes treatment and in the treatment of elevated blood lipids. One study conducted by Dr. O.R. Agarwal followed 5,000 heart disease patients over a 5 year period as they took 100 grams of aloe twice daily. At the end of the 5 years, Dr. Agarwal found that out of 3,167 diabetic patients, 2,990 patients had their blood sugar levels return to normal. Also, of all 5,000 patients, not one had a fresh heart attack.

Due to the many properties aloe vera contains, the cosmetics and health industries have made wide use of the plant. There are a good number of health drinks that include aloe vera juice in their ingredients for its healthful properties. Olay and Jergens hand lotions both have lines of product containing aloe.
